The Passover Seder and the Haggadah

Passover SederPassover is the most popular and well observed Jewish holiday. People gather together to tell the biblical story of freedom at Passover Seders. Each symbol on the seder plate reminds us of the Biblical story of Freedom. In this lesson, you will learn about the items on the Seder plate, two Passover songs from the Haggadah, and tips on where to hide the Afikomen.

#1 Mr. Passover teaches us about the Haggadah.

Mr. PassoverHi again, Mr. Passover here to share more Passover insights with you. Did you know there are 15 different parts to the seder dinner? When you open the Haggadah (seder book), turn to the table of contents. You’ll notice 15 different sections with everything from saying the prayer for wine, to listing the Ten Plagues, to re-telling the story of the Exodus. There are several courses of food and each food on the seder plate has a specific meaning. Some foods are sweet and others are bitter but each section is to help take us back into history to the land of Israel 3000 years ago.

#6 STUDY these Jewish text insights

szyk haggadahThe Hebrew word haggadah means “the telling.” On Passover, we use a book at the seder to tell the story of the Jewish people’s journey from slavery to passover.

There are many types of haggadah’s. Which one you use is not important. The important thing is to tell the story of Exodus each year as “if you were there and as if you were escaping slavery and going to freedom.”

This picture is the cover to the Szyk Haggadah that was created in the late 1930’s. Happy Passover!

#7 Respond and React
Now that you have watched the videos, and learned about some parts of the Seder, review and reflect on these questions.

1. What does the word “Haggadah” mean in English?
2. What are the six items on the Seder plate?
3. What are the Four Questions (mah nish tanah)?
4. Where would you hide the afikomen at your seder if it was your job to hide it?
