The Ark Campaign
We have been blessed with the opportunity to restore, repair, and renew a part of New York history. In 1888, a group of Polish Jews from Mezritch came to New York and in 1910 they opened a shul at 415 E. 6th Street. After 100 years of continual use, the Mesertiz Synagogue directors decided to sell the building. On May 1, 2013, developers began converting the old synagogue into condominiums, but days before, we went into the sanctuary to rescue the Ark.
We gently dismantled the Ark, piece by piece, and it is currently being restored at a warehouse in Brooklyn. Soon, through a generous arrangement with St. Paul’s Chapel, we will display the new Ark and repurpose it.
We seek your support for the effort to restore this Ark and to reclaim a piece of New York Jewish history for another generation. Thank you.
This Ark will be part of our lives and our children’s lives forever. We hope you and your family will join us in creating Tamid’s Ark. Every contributor’s name (or the name of a loved one) will be placed on the Tzedek Wall at Tamid (see below).
The artists rendering of our Tzedek Wall (below) will proudly display your name, the name of your family, or the name of a loved one in our main lobby. Contributors giving at $5,000 or more will also be named on the permanent plaque that will stand adjacent to Tamid’s Ark in the Chapel and stay with the Ark when on loan in the future.
